Wild Sunday and Hermanus on the horizon event
Darn, if this is spring they can keep it!
Saturday dawned beautiful and warm, however the wind failed to raise any steam
and the few of us who gathered up at Kommetjie had to amuse ourselves with time spent
hunting thermals in hot and bumpy conditions.
Sunday morning heralded the approaching storm, with the gas turned up
the wind was whistling through the willows in the wee hours of the morning already,
and by dawn had some purpose about it. The Aerobatics League event was
called off once we arrived at Chapman’s Peak and witnessed white horses
gaily charging across the bay with rain showers in hot pursuit. The wind already
pushing in at 40-50 kilometers per hour would have made it a competition of survival,
rather than disciplined aerobatics event. Still not to be outdone,
most who had awoken early anyway pitched on the slope and
proceeded to bash the rubbish out of each other with BEE wings at insane speeds.
No glassies ventured out, as the landing bowl was plain hell on legs,
and damaged gliders would have been an almost certain outcome.
Somewhere around 11:30 AM the rain started and the wind gathered even more pace
being measured at 70 kilometers per hour at stages.
Thats when we left the scene of the accident!
Not to be outdone,Bobby, Charlie and the FAC guys ran back to Signal hill and by 2PM
were flying in winds that hit the 110 kilometers per hour mark.
Reported flights of a large scale fox took place while damage was
done to another as the anti was pushed up.
Finally the centre of the storm arrived at about 3PM, the rain set in for good
and pelted down through the night. Talk about a place of opposites,
this peninsula can sure serve up it’s fair share of weird and wonderful weather patterns.
And finally, AFC has announced the opening of registration for Hermanus 2010.
Jeff beat all the other TOSSers for registration, as did Sean from PERF,
so lets get on the net and get registered in for what always promises and ends up being,
a fantastic weekend of sportsmanship, camaraderie and friendship
with a wee bit of sloping thrown in for giggles.
