I 'll show you lads, pay attention now...
What a brilliant weekend! Some of us who have our minds set
on the PSS Festival in June and scratch building subjects, had to put it
all to the side, grab every glider that carried a charge and literally charge for the slope.
Saturday delivered strong conditions, but with the cloud low over St. James
we ended up at Red Hill on a day we would normally consider somewhat
overpowering for that slope.
With the wind firmly from the SSE, strong and smooth away from the slope,
but a wee bit bumpy on the slope front, we had a glorious day and
spent all of 5 hours with gliders in the air, with scarce a break in between.
Sunday dawned much the same but with the wind switching to the pure SE
the conditions improved even more and became as smooth as silk
even though the wind was peaking at 40km/h plus. Every darn thing that had wings
was duly tossed off the slope and Chris Leal spent 1.5 unbroken hours patrolling
the air with the Lanyu, before it was subtly suggested he land and replace batteries
before they failed mid flight. With a full crew on the slope a brilliant set of combat sessions
took pace and mirth was the first order of business. Bee gliders were whacked, thrashed,
beaten and finally bushwhacked in a few really mind-blowing sessions.
Quite honestly this day rated as one of the best of the year, other than the day of the Aerobatic Contest.
Final act of the day saw the peanut gallery of Schalk, Steve, Bill, Christo, Marc and Graham
taking a rocky seat and howling with laughter, while watching the indomnitable Mr Leal give
a demonstration of not so smooth low level flying across the bushes on the front
of the slope while yelling ” I ‘ll show you lads, pay attention now!
among a string of other somewhat daft commentaries. Gotta love the lad.
Truly, laughter is the best medicine and we soaked it up in buckets.
Ah well, off to Dixies for a beer.
