Hermanus Slope Event 2013 - a few notes
So It came and went, and boy did it go big. For once the wind played in our favour and all three days produced magical lift. Arriving Friday morning after a 5 AM drive we were made to wait a wee while till mother nature gave in and started to blow. Then it kept it up. For the TOSS guys, we had a blast and the day was made good by the maiden of the 4 meter ASW 28 and plenty of all round flights on the very uncrowded Hermanus slope by Lionel, David , Bill to name a few.
After the traditional dinner at Rossi’s we all headed back to the awesome Volmoed chalets for the evening. Saturday brought through a stunning South Easter and by 11 AM, we were all rocking around much better. The day took it’s toll with the write off of the P38 lightning by yours truly and a daft move that saw him forever nicknamed the pole dancer after the event. The Vulcan had battery failure and met the ground and the large scale Hawker Hunter made a headlong dive for the carpark. So for TOSS, the tally was rather high, but Ryan had a great time with the previously owned Damian Mustang and Martin Venn and Anton Benning had a blast with the large scale Imp’s and Hawks all followed up by Alan with the fantastic camera plane designed to hold 4 GoPro cameras facing opposite directions. Back to the chalets for some awesome late evening flying up at the back of Volmoed and the start of a very good braai, everybody fell into bed and slept soundly. Sunday thew in the expected Easterly and so the show moved to the east slope, but the PE boys and some of us TOSS stayed at the towers and played in the side on wind. T he Sky Climber is a fun glider that is worth every penny when the lift goes bad and we played dodge the flag poles, and in the end had a fantastic session with smoke canisters on the wings. In the end it was a fantastic weekend had by all and we headed off the hill much happier and vowing to return next year. Much thanks goes to all the TOSSers, the magical PE and EP boys, welcome back to Sean Ruth, and to all who made the event possible from the AFC side. Well done one and all! and a special thanks to the wonderful wives who accompanied all the guys for the weekend, got tanned, burnt to a crisp and still hung in there for the three days. Kudos!
