Stranger and stranger, should be the call for this peninsula of ours. With a good few of us sitting in Hout Bay without winda small crew of Alan, Steve and Christo basked at Red Hillin moderate South Eater while the rest of us sat guessing what the hell was going to happen. In the end Red Hill

It wasn’t supposed to be at all this weekend with all the wind predictors showing basically very little for the whole weekend.Saturday blew in a fresh north wester and those that got to Chappies earlygot the best of the pick, but by the end of the day it all tailed off, but we were still

Bowling a maiden over

After last weeks dismal performance, and days of howling south east trade windsthe weekend finally produced one of the oh so magical days.Saturday came through with the most beautiful of spring days with a moderate South Easter blowing.Ryan, David and myself headed to the slope at about 9AM to get the early bird/worm thing settled

As I type the 5th day in a row of absolutely howling south eaters batters the Peninsulapushing pot plants around the garden with glee and making the pool take on the look of a well kept garden refuse dumpThe windy season has well and truly arrived!and true to form should last through to November, however the

Back to basics and two awesome days on the slope

Kevin October 9, 2012 Slope Soaring No Comments

Saturday delivered one of those beautiful slope dayswith a not so gentle pure Westerly pushing through. Signals, Chapmans Peak Carpark and Kommetjie West slope all had peopleout enjoying the day and by all accounts each slope worked beautifully.I had close to 3 hours Aldij flight on Saturday at the carpark and conditions were just superb,

NvsS and a westerly weekend

Kevin September 25, 2012 Slope Soaring No Comments

After last weeks complete lack of wind, and hence complete lack of report…other than taking some skyclimbers and nearly giving a few dogs
a haircut or two on a sports field… there was nary a breath of wind for the slope boys.

And with the weekend coming up for the second annual North Versus South competition
in Durban, it was really good to finally get some air this weekend for practice.
A big thanks to Christo, Malcolm and Dave who will head up from the South
to take on the Durban lads in a pylon racing event that is likely to gather more
and more competitors the longer it goes on and achieve the status of
THE PYLON RACING EVENT OF THE YEAR.
At last count I heard there will be 17 entries which is just awesome,
and hopefully next year we can add far more TOSS representation
to the event as unfortunate circumstances have knocked a few of us out
of the running for this year. The Durban lads hospitality and friendship no
no limits so it is always well worth the visit.
Go boys Go and please bring back some pylon racing trophies.

This weekend delivered a lovely day out on Chapmans Peak on the Saturday
and conditions allowed us to fly all and sundry, although a bit from the west,
the lift held all day. Chris Leal made it into town and joined the fun with a 3M Lanyu
which is just a gas to fly, but a bastard to land on our slopes due to the size
and the fynbos working together to make sure your landing has to be completely perfect,
or else…twigs, merry little twigs.
Sunday just rained cats and dogs all day and really dampened the spirits
by refusing to clear up for any amount of time.
Monday, Heritage day and a holiday dawned beautiful and after a somewhat fitful start
turned into a beautiful day up at Kommetjie with the lift improving all day
and a large range of all sorts of craft took to the air, from gliders to paragliders
all sharing the same wonderful mountain side.

Makes you want to go slope with immediate effect!

Carpark antics in a Westerly

Kevin September 10, 2012 Slope Soaring No Comments

What an awesome day Saturday was. Just the most beautiful day
on the Peninsula, but sans any real wind with a light and variable
South Westerly caressing the Peninsula
and so Brendan and myself headed up to Coil Corner
for an hour or looked for lift with the Sky Climbers
in the most beautiful blue sky available.
Overnight inot , the predicted front arrived amid some fierce
North Westerly gust, and then dumped a load of rain on us
as if it was going to continue for 40 days and 40 nights.
However it soon broke and the sun came out and the crew
made a run for the Chapman’s Peak carpark site.
The wind was positively freezing the nuts off monkeys, straight out of the west
and plumb up the carpark slope and the lift was hugely dynamic.
The entire TOSS crew pitched and a blast was had by all,
including Bobby, Alex and a few other AFC lads who ran
from Signals due to rain and low cloud and came and joined us for the day.
The Aldij’s simply tore up the sky, Ryan’s home brewed Mamba rocked,
the foamie warbirds zoomed and combat was furious, with more
that a few fetches registered for the day.
In the end it is one of the best ever carpark sessions
and the westerly maintained the entire afternoon and
the slope continued to rock right up to sundown.
Phew, what an awesome day!
